7 Things You Didn’t Know About Phillip Island

Ready to discover an entirely new destination?

You’re in luck, because Phillip Island is so much more than just penguins! This little island off mainland Victoria, Australia, has plenty to offer the would-be visitor and, whether you’re considering a weekend jaunt or a week-long sojourn, will guarantee you won’t be bored…

Did you Know?

Phillip Island has…the highest vertical indoor slide in the Southern Hemisphere

A staggering 6.5 metres tall, the LOOK OUT!!! Slide at A Maze ‘N Things can be described as a bit of an adrenalin rush – even if you’re just watching! Fun fact: Dorothy went down the slide at 85 years old.

Did you Know?

Phillip Island has… Australia’s largest 3D timber maze

Make sure you set aside a couple of hours for your visit to A Maze N Things – The Maze alone has an average completion time of 45 mins! A Maze N Things is a crowd-pleaser for the young and young-at-heart alike, full of optical illusions, activities, puzzles and, of course, the highest vertical indoor slide (above)!

Did you Know?

Phillip Island has… one of Australia’s largest penguin colonies

Every night at sunset, visitors have been enchanted by the Penguin Parade: a colony of penguins waddling up the beach to their homes. Known as Little Penguins (as they’re the smallest in the world), these famous residents can be seen via general admission or on a special ranger tour.

Phillip Island has… a chocolate factory with a secret recipe

The Phillip Island Chocolate Factory, to risk stating the obvious, has chocolate. Lots of it. You can eat it, take it home, make your own (with weird and wacky flavour combinations if that’s your style), ogle a chocolate Dame Edna, and marvel at all the handmade goodies . Read more at my earlier blog post, A Smorgasbord of Chocolate Factories: Panny’s, Phillip Island.

Phillip Island has… the only Go Kart track of its kind in Australia

The Grand Prix Circuit is home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, a World Superbikes round, and V8 Supercars.

Its Go Kart track is a scaled replica of the infamous Grand Prix Circuit, with absolutely amazing views! Or, try Hot Laps on the Grand Prix Circuit, complete with a race-prepared vehicle and racing car driver (if you dare).

Did you Know?

Phillip Island has… Australia’s largest fur seal colony

Seal Rocks,  it seems, are fittingly named. A magical sight for wildlife lovers, this seal colony makes its home 2km off the shore of The Nobbies. That’s 30,000 seals, about one quarter of the entire seal population of Australia. You can take a tour for a close up look, or use state-of-the-art viewing cameras at The Nobbies Centre to watch those playful seals.

Tip: If you time your visit right, you can see Little Penguins waddling about and Silver Gulls chicks and nests.
