Experiences vs Things: Mother’s Day Edition

I’m fascinated with some research that’s come out over the last few years indicating that experiences rather than things will make you happier, for longer.  In a nutshell, the things you experience become a part of who you are, unlike the objects you buy.

With that in mind, here’s a top list of Experiences the mums in your life might like this Mother’s Day.

Just Add Family: One of my most memorable Mother’s Day s I’ve had was when my partner organised a BBQ breakfast with our extended family – sisters, in laws, neices, kids.  It’s not always easy to schedule time for everyone to get together.  As Mother’s Day tends to be ‘set aside’ for family, why not include everyone!

Just Add Friends: Make that Girl’s Day your mum keeps going on about actually happen.  It requires absolutely minimal effort – get in touch with her closest friends, tell them to be at a place at a certain time, add food, and some bubbly, then make sure they get home safe (perhaps you could be chauffeur for the day?)

Experiences vs things

Just Add A Food & Wine: There’s a lot happening in the world of food and wine festivals in May.  The Noosa Food & Wine Festival has a ridiculous amount of new food and wine experiences you could discover with your mum!  Further North, the Port Douglas Carnivale brings you local tropical delights, along with food and entertainment.  Create some food memories that will last long after the meal is over.

Just Add Adventure:  Deep down, I think everyone wants to live a little on the edge.  You’ll know best where that edge is for your mum.  Successfully take them outside their comfort zone, and although they may protest to begin with, they’ll be giddy with delight (and a little relief!) at the end.  For your mum, the edge might be a roller coaster ride at your local theme park.  For other mums, the edge might be , riding a jet ski (or a Harley!), cutting a rug with you at your favourite bar, or jumping out of  a plane!

Jump From a plane

Just Add Bubbles:  For me, a glass of bubbly will turn any old occasion into a festive occasion!  An afternoon swim in the pool turns into a ‘delightful soiree’ with a glass of bubbly.  Why not pick your mum up, and set her up with some nibbles and a glass of bubbly and just go for a Sunday drive.  Lovely and decadent!

Just Add Relaxation:  Give your mum the ultimate experience – take her on holiday!  Holidays are notorious for making memories.  Early morning walks, long breakfasts, or lunches, or dinners.  Trying new restaurants, exploring the shops, and just being tourists.  Your mum will love you (even more than she already does!) for it.

Experiences vs things – mums win in the end.  Happy Mother’s Day to all our Wandrful Mums!
