10 Reasons to Holiday in Melbourne

(Like you need the excuse!)

One / Because…

Melbourne’s the sole city in the world to have not one, not two, not three, but five international-standard major sporting facilities around the CBD:

Melbourne Cricket Ground | Docklands Stadium | Rod Laver Arena | Hisense Arena | Olympic Park in Melbourne Park

And, yes, the game is on, with Australian Open tennis championships until 2 February 2015!

Two / Because…

You can ogle the world’s largest stained glass ceiling at National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Measuring 51m wide x 15m long, the ceiling was created nearly 50 years ago by Australian artist Leonard French.

Psst – There’s a Jean Paul Gautier fashion exhibition on until 8 February 2015. Prefer a soundtrack to your visit? Art Nights are held regularly, with DJs, bars, food, and exhibitions open until late!

Three / Because…

Australia’s most controversial spread was invented in Melbourne by the Fred Walker Company (you may know them now as the Kraft Food Company) in 1922. Vegemite – you either love it or hate it, but can’t deny it as a cultural icon.

Four / Because…

You can get around by riding the largest tram system outside of Europe – making Melbourne trams the fourth largest system in the whole wide world.

For maximum efficiency, eat lunch or dinner while sightseeing on The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant.

Five / Because…

The best way to see Port Phillip Bay is while screaming yourself hoarse on the oldest continuously operated roller coaster in the world. Obviously.

Ride The Great Scenic Railway at Luna Park Melbourne for the ultimate in nostalgic thrills.

Six / Because…

Eureka Skydeck 88 is the Southern Hemisphere’s highest viewing platform. And if you’re really brave (or are trying to impress someone), step out onto The Edge: a glass cube protruding from the building, a mere 300m off the ground. Whoa.

Seven / Because…

Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

You can see Dirty Dancing live on stage at one of the Melbourne’s grandest Victorian buildings, the exquisite Princess Theatre.

Did you know? Melbourne stonemasons were first in the world to gain an 8-hour working day, carving the way (hehe!) to better conditions for all workers.

Eight / Because…

If you’re a fan of ‘escape the room’ mobile apps, you’ll love real-life Escapism at Strike QV. Locked in a room with just 50 mins to escape, you and your friends will need to find hidden clues , crack codes and solve riddles (or you’ll be trapped forever). Eek!

Nine / Because…

Melbourne was nearly called Batmania!

John Batman was one of the city’s founding fathers, and the name was tossed around before the Governor of NSW settled on ‘Melbourne’. So close!

Ten / Because…
